People have been reaping the benefits of spin classes for years, but if you’ve never tried one, stepping into the classroom can be intimidating. As fun as they are, it’s normal to feel a little anxiety over trying new experiences, but properly preparing yourself can help ease your nerves and ensure you have a great time.

First Time Taking Spin Classes? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect on your first day at spin class, how to prepare, and other helpful tips.

What to Expect from Your Spin Classes

It’s good gym etiquette to show up about 10 to 15 minutes before class starts, which gives everyone time to check in, set up, and start a warmup if they desire. Ask if your studio offers bike fitting sessions, or turn to the instructor for help adjusting the bike to the right comfort.

Spin classes typically range from half an hour to a full hour and will include various segments such as warmup, intervals, and cooldown. Expect to move through a mix of seated and standing positions with varying levels of resistance and speed to simulate hills and sprints.

Spin classes are often held in darkened rooms with vibrant lighting and high-energy music, which helps create an energizing atmosphere. Don’t be surprised to hear a few excited whoops through the class, and feel free to let yourself get caught up in the rhythm and excitement.

What to Bring to Your Spin Classes

  • Water Bottle – Hydration is essential! Be sure you have a full water bottle to sip on throughout the class.
  • Towel – The goal is to work up a sweat, so having a towel ready is a good idea.
  • Appropriate Attire – Wear comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing that you can move freely in. Sneakers are a good shoe to start with, and if you wind up loving spin classes, you can consider upgrading to cycling shoes.

Remember to listen to your body throughout the class – it’s okay to make adjustments and take breaks as needed! The goal is to have fun as you work on making your body healthier, so embrace the energy, music, and fun of the experience.
